Q:  How to use the Administrator PrintSir Configuration Utility to configure the PrintSir device?
A:  The most important thing is to assign a fixed IP address to PrintSir device.  You need to find out an available IP address in your network for PrintSir.  If you assign a wrong IP address to PrintSir, PrintSir will not function well in your network.
You can find out an example of  IP address in your network by checking the IP address of  your windows workstation.

  • Click the Start menu.  Select Run.  Type 'command' and hit OK.
  • Under command prompt, type 'ip config /all'.  You can find out the IP address of your workstation.

If you have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, the first three numbers of your IP addresses should be the same in all your workstations.  For example, you have 192.168.10.50 in your workstation, then all other workstations including the PrintSir should use an IP like 192.168.0.x to be in the same network.

Run the PrintSir Configuration Utility program.  Click on the IP CFG tab.  Select the option of  manually assign IP address and input your IP address for PrintSir.  Click on Write button.  Then click on the Reset button.  Reset may take a few seconds.  When the reset is done, click the PrintSir Status tab.  Make sure the Active IP shows the correct IP address.

You can run the PING command to verify the network connection with PrintSir.  Here is the procedure.

  • Click the Start menu.  Select Run.  Type 'command' and hit OK.
  • Under command prompt, type ping 192.168.10.30 and hit enter.  (suppose 192.168.10.30 is the IP address of PrintSir).  You should receive 4 replies with send=4, receive=4, and lost=0.  Now you know the IP address for PrintSir is setup correctly.

Q:  What is the procedure to configure a windows workstation to use PrintSir?  (This procedure applies to Windows XP, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME, and Windows 95)

  • A: Have one of your computers installs the Administrator Utility to configure a fixed IP address to PrintSir unit.
  • Test the connection by using PING command from your workstation.
Click on the Start menu.  Select Run.  Type 'command' and hit OK.  Under the command prompt, ping the IP address of PrintSir unit like c:\>ping 192.168.10.30.  You should receive 4 success replies, packet sent=4 receive=4 lost=0.  If you receive request time out messages, there is problem in the network connection or IP addresses are not setup correctly.  Stop here.
  • Put the CD that came with PrintSir into the CD ROM of your Windows workstation.  Install the Client Driver utility program.  The Network Port Quick Setup will detect the PrintSir unit and create the PrintSir Network ports automatically.
  • Click on the Start menu.  Select Settings.  Select Printers.  If you have not installed the printer driver yet, install the printer's driver as the printer is a local printer which connects with the local printer port of the computer.
  • Right click on your printer's driver and select Properties.
If your computer runs Windows 95/98/ME, click on the Details tab.  For the value of 'Print to the Following Ports', select the correct PrintSir Network Port which is created by the Quick Setup program automatically at step 3 above.
If your computer runs Windows NT/2000/XP, click on the Ports tab.  Check the box of the PrintSir Network Port.
  • Click Apply.  Then you can print a test page in the General tab.

Q:  What is the default IP address of PrintSir unit?

A:  By factory default, when the PrintSir is powered on, it will check if there is any DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server in the network.  If there is a DHCP server in the network, PrintSir will get an IP address automatically from the DHCP server.  If there is no DHCP server in the network, PrintSir will use the default IP address 10.0.0.1 and become a DHCP server.

The DHCP server function of PrintSir will assign IP starting from 10.0.0.2 to client workstations.

You can run the PrintSir Administrator Configuration Utility to change the IP address of PrintSir, enable/disable the DHCP server function, or modify the pool range of IP addresses for DHCP client workstations.

Q:  When I install the software, I received error message saying there is another version of software existed in the computer.  How to resolve this problem?

A:  While you try to install the current version of PrintSir software but you receive an error message saying there is an existing software in the system.   Please uninstall the existing PrintSir software in Add&Remove Programs of Control Panel.  If this does not help, you can use the following procedure.

The following procedure is to manually remove the driver from your Windows registry.  Please do it with care, because regedit is powerful and new settings will be effective right away.

  • Click the Start menu then select Run. Type 'regedit' and hit OK.
  • Go to the Hkey_local_machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
You will have a "PrintSir Network Port' entry.  Delete the PrintSir Network Port by highlight it and press Delete key.
  • Go to the Hkey_local_machine\Software
You might have a "PrintSir' entry.  If you have it, delete the PrintSir software.
  • Close the registry editor window.  Now you should be able to install the PrintSir software.

Q: I print a job but the print job stays in the queue.

A: Please make sure the printer configuration (IP address, port name, etc.) is correct. Follow the instruction in the general procedure, you can do some test.  For example, PING the IP address of PrintSir.

For our PS-901/PS-1001 which can not support bi-direction communication, if you run Windows 98/ME/95, you need to disable the bi-direction function in the Spool Settings.  Some printer driver provides the bi-direction function and you have to disable it.  You can go to the property of the printer driver.  Click Detailed tab.  Click Spool Settings.  Then you can disable the bi-direction function.

You can also check the property of printer driver.  Click Advanced tab.  If there is an check on the option 'Enable Advanced Feature', you can try uncheck this option.  Click Apply button.  And test print again.

Q:  I need to print from a DOS application. How can I do that?

The DOS program only can print to LPT1 or LPT2 of the local printer port of computers.  Therefore, you need to capture printer port and redirect the LPT1 to a network printer port for the Print Server.

The procedure for windows 2000 and XP workstations is not the same with the procedure for windows 95/98/NT/ME.

For windows 95/98/NT/ME network, you need to share the printer from one computer so another computer can do the redirection.  It  means one of your computer needs to be on for other computers can print the DOS program.  In our example below, machine B is the windows 95/98/NT/ME machine that needs to print DOS application.

  • First of all, make sure you have one machine (suppose machine A) print fine from a windows application to the print server device.  Then click on Start button.  Select Settings.  Select Printers.  Right click the mouse on the printer icon and then select Sharing.   If you do not have the sharing option, you need to enable the File and Printer sharing option in Network of Control Panel.
  • Under Sharing, enable the sharing and assign a share name (suppose HP4000sharing) then click OK.  You will see a hand underneath the printer icon.
  • Find out  the computer name by going to Network in Control Panel.  Click on the Identification tab.  You will see the computer name.  Write the computer name down.  Here in our example, we use machine A as the computer name.
  • Go to the machine (suppose machine B) that needs to print the DOS application.  Click on the Start button.  Select Settings.  Select Printers.  Right click the mouse on the printer icon and select Properties.  Click on the Detailed tab.
  • Click Capture Printer Ports button.  Make sure you select LPT1.  In path, type \\ComputerName\ShareName which computer name and Printer share name are the names in step 2 and step 3 above.  In our example, it is \\machine A \HP4000sharing.
Check the option 'reconnect at logon'.  By doing so, you will save the settings even you reboot your system.
Click OK.  And click Apply or OK button.
  • Now you can test print your DOS application from your computer machine B.

If your machine B runs windows 2000 or windows XP, you do not need Machine A share the printer.  Have the windows 2000 and XP share the printer and redirect LPT1 to the computer itself.  For example, in step 5, machine B can redirect LPT1 to \\machine B \HP4000sharing directly.

Q: After remove the print server to another network segment, the print server can not be reached anymore.

A: If two network segments are separated by a bridge or router, the IP address of print server may not be correct any more after the print server is moved to another network segment. We suggest you check the IP address of the Print Server by running the PrintSir Configuration utility.  You can modify the IP address of print server according to your network environment.

Q:  The PrintSir Configuration Utility can not detect the PrintSir unit.  All the function tabs in the configuration program are gray out.  What should I do?

  • A: Unplug the power of PrintSir and plug the power back in to reset the PrintSir unit.
For single port print server units, you should see the orange Status LED flash 6 times and stay off.  The green Network LED could flash or stay solid on.
For three ports print server units, you should see the LED for parallel port 1 flash 6 times and stay off.

If the Status LED does not off, try exchange the power adapter with another PrintSir unit.
  • The PrintSir Configuration Utility (Wincfg.exe) is composed of WinIP.exe and WinIPX.exe programs.
Run the WinIP.exe program from c:\program files\PrintSir Configuration Utilities\WinUtil folder.  This program uses IP protocol to detect the PrintSir unit.
  • If WinIP.exe program can not detect PrintSir unit, try the WinIPX.exe program.  WinIPX.exe uses IPX protocol to detect the PrintSir unit.  Your computer needs to install Novell IPX protocol before you run WinIPX.exe program.
To install the Novell protocol, right click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties.  Click on Add and add Client.  Select Microsoft and select Client for NetWare networks.  Click on OK twice.  You windows might ask for windows 98 CD ROM and copy some files.  After computer restarts, try the WinIPX.exe program again to detect PrintSir unit.  Once it is detected, you can assign a fixed IP address or do other configuration to PrintSir.
  • Try change the networking cable of print server or the networking cable of your workstation.

Q:  The PrintSir Configuration Utility WinIP.exe program can not find the print server. The WinIPX.exe program can find the print server instead.  What causes this?

A: This might be caused by the following:

  • The TCP/IP function of print server has been disable. Please enable the TCP/IP protocol of PrintSir.
  • The IP address of your Windows workstation is 0.0.0.0 (that is, the IP address is setup to obtain automatically but there is no DHCP server on the network). Please set up the IP address for your Windows workstation.
  • The Windows workstation and print servers are NOT on the same network (sub-network). Windows workstation has an IP address which is not in the same network with PrintSir.
  • You should wait one minute after resetting the print server. The WinCFG program may not find the print server if  the IP address of print server is 0.0.0.0.  After power print server on, print server will try about 1 minute to get an IP address. If there is no DHCP server or the print server does not get an IP automatically, print server will use the default 10.0.0.1 IP address.  Then WinCFG.exe program can find the print server.

Q:  I've done everything I can, but the print job still stays in the queue

A:  Usually this is caused by the port of the printer.  Please make sure you select the correct port - print server network port or the standard TCP/IP Port.

And make sure the box of "enable birectional support" is cleared.

Make sure the printer is not OffLine.
